Starting a business from scratch is one of the hardest things you can do. Not because people are not capable โ but because you are figuring out everything at once. The product, the pricing, the marketing, the clients, the systems, the tech, the admin. All of it, simultaneously, with no roadmap and no one to call when things go sideways.
Franchising flips that on its head.
When you buy into a franchise, you are not buying a job. You are buying a proven model โ one that someone else has already tested, broken, fixed, and refined. The hard work of working out what actually works has already been done. Your job is to take that model, apply it in your area, and build something of your own on top of a foundation that already exists.
The numbers back it up
The British Franchise Association consistently reports that over 90% of franchisees describe their business as profitable. Compare that to the general small business failure rate โ where around half of new businesses do not make it past five years โ and the picture becomes pretty clear. Franchising is not a guarantee of success. But it significantly improves your odds.
Why? Because you are not guessing. You know what to sell, how to sell it, what to charge, and how to deliver it. You have training, support, and a brand that already means something. You are starting on the front foot.
What you actually get
A good franchise gives you more than a name to trade under. It gives you:
- A proven system that you can follow from day one
- Marketing materials that are already built and tested
- Training that gets you up to speed quickly and properly
- Ongoing support so you are never stuck on your own
- A network of other franchisees who have been through what you are going through
That last one is underrated. When you are having a tough month or wrestling with a problem you cannot solve, being able to pick up the phone to someone who has been exactly where you are is genuinely valuable.
Independence with a safety net
The thing people love most about franchising is the combination of being your own boss and not being completely on your own. You set your own hours, build your own client relationships, grow at your own pace โ but you have a structure around you that keeps things on track.
It is the best of both worlds. The freedom of running your own business, with the support of people who want you to succeed.
Is it for everyone?
No. Franchising works best for people who are self-motivated, good with people, and willing to follow a proven system rather than reinvent every wheel. If you want to do everything your own way from day one, franchising might feel restrictive. But if you want a faster, safer route into business ownership โ it is hard to beat.
The question is not whether franchising works. It does. The question is whether you are the right person for the model you are looking at.
