I get asked this question more than almost any other. "Phil, should I be using Claude or Gemini? They both seem to do the same thing โ what is the actual difference?"
It is a fair question. On the surface, they look similar. You type something in, you get an answer back. But underneath, they are built for completely different jobs โ and picking the wrong one is like using a hammer to drive in a screw. It will work, eventually, but it will be painful.
Here is the plain English breakdown.
The Short Answer
Gemini is your fast, connected assistant. It lives inside Google, sees the live web, and is brilliant for quick tasks, research, and anything that involves your Google Workspace.
Claude is your deep-thinking writer. It handles long documents, complex strategy, and anything where you want the output to actually sound like a human wrote it โ not a robot.
Both are excellent. They just shine in different places.
Gemini: The Google Powerhouse
Gemini is built by Google, and it has one massive advantage that no other AI has โ it is plugged directly into the Google ecosystem.
If your business runs on Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Calendar, Gemini can see all of it. It can summarise an email thread. It can pull data from your Drive. It can check your Calendar and tell you what your week looks like. No copying and pasting. No exporting files. It just knows.
Where Gemini wins:
- Quick answers and brainstorming
- Summarising long email threads in Gmail
- Drafting documents directly in Google Docs
- Searching across your entire Google Drive
- Real-time web research โ it sees what is happening today, not last year
- Image generation (it can create pictures as well as text)
Where Gemini is weaker:
- Long-form writing can feel a bit generic
- It does not hold context as well as Claude on very long documents
- The tone can slip into "helpful but slightly corporate"
Best for: Business owners who live inside Google Workspace and want AI that slots into their existing workflow without any extra logins or subscriptions.
Claude: The Deep-Work Writer
Claude is built by a company called Anthropic, and it has a different feel entirely. Where Gemini is the fast-talking PA, Claude is the thoughtful colleague who actually reads the whole document before responding.
Its biggest strength is something called a context window โ which is basically how much it can remember in a single conversation. Claude's is enormous. You can drop in a 200-page manual, a full set of brand guidelines, and ten previous examples of your writing โ and it will hold all of it while it works.
Where Claude wins:
- Long-form writing โ proposals, reports, blog posts, articles
- Writing that actually sounds like you, not a robot
- Analysing large documents or PDFs
- Complex strategy and "help me think this through" work
- Anything where nuance and tone matter
Where Claude is weaker:
- No image generation (you will need another tool for that)
- Less connected to your daily tools than Gemini
- Slightly less well-known, so fewer tutorials floating around
Best for: Business owners who write a lot โ proposals, content, client communications โ and want output that reads like it was written by a thoughtful human.
The Honest Comparison
| Task | Better Choice | Why | |------|--------------|-----| | Quick email draft | Gemini | Faster, lives in Gmail | | 10-page proposal | Claude | Better long-form writing | | Summarise my inbox | Gemini | Direct Gmail access | | Write in my brand voice | Claude | Holds tone more consistently | | Research today's news | Gemini | Live web access | | Analyse a 100-page PDF | Claude | Bigger context window | | Create an image | Gemini | Claude cannot do images | | Write a tricky client email | Claude | More nuanced tone |
Do You Need Both?
Honestly โ some of my clients do. And I do myself.
Gemini for the quick, connected stuff. Claude for the deep, thoughtful stuff. They cost about ยฃ17-20 a month each on the paid plans. For what you get, that is extraordinary value.
But if you are just starting out, pick one and learn it properly. Dabbling in both without understanding either is the most common mistake I see.
My Recommendation
Start with Gemini if:
- You already live in Google Workspace
- You want quick wins and fast results
- You are new to AI and want the easiest entry point
Start with Claude if:
- You write a lot โ proposals, content, client emails
- You want output that sounds human, not robotic
- You work with long documents or complex projects
