Here is a truth most web designers will not tell you. Your website is not a brochure. It is a salesperson that works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, never calls in sick, and never asks for a pay rise.
The problem? Most small business websites are terrible salespeople. The copy is vague. The structure is confusing. The calls to action are buried. And the owner has no idea because nobody has ever told them.
AI can fix most of this. Not by replacing your website โ by making it work harder.
1. Better Website Copy
This is the biggest win. Most small business websites say things like "We provide quality services to our clients." That means nothing. It could describe anyone.
AI can take your rough notes about what you actually do โ the bullet points you would tell a friend over a pint โ and turn them into clear, compelling website copy that actually speaks to your customers.
Try this: open Claude or Gemini, paste your current homepage text, and ask: "Rewrite this to be clearer, more engaging, and focused on what the customer gets. Make it sound human, not corporate."
The difference will shock you.
2. Faster Page Descriptions
Every page on your website needs a meta description โ that short snippet that appears under your link in Google. Most business owners never write them. AI can write all of them in two minutes.
Just paste your page content and ask: "Write a 155-character meta description for this page that makes someone want to click."
3. Answering Customer Questions
Every customer has questions before they buy. "How much does it cost?" "How long does it take?" "Do you cover my area?" If those answers are not on your website, people leave.
Ask AI: "What are the 10 most common questions a customer would have before hiring a [your profession] in [your area]?" Then write clear answers to each one on a dedicated FAQ page.
4. Improving Your Calls to Action
A call to action is the thing that tells people what to do next โ "Call now," "Book online," "Get a quote." Most websites bury these or make them vague.
AI can review your pages and tell you exactly where your calls to action are weak and how to fix them. Paste your page and ask: "Review this page and tell me if the call to action is clear. Suggest three improvements."
Start With One Page
Do not try to fix your whole website at once. Pick your homepage. Use AI to improve the copy, write the meta description, add an FAQ section, and sharpen the call to action. One page. One hour. You will see the difference.
Your website should be earning its keep. With AI, it finally can.
