If you've heard the word "connector" thrown around in AI conversations and nodded along without quite knowing what it means, you're not alone. In plain English: a connector lets an AI assistant reach into another app โ your email, your calendar, your files, your CRM โ so it can actually do something with your real information, instead of just chatting in a box.
Here's how the main platforms stack up right now.
Claude (Anthropic)
Claude connects to hundreds of tools โ Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, Notion, HubSpot, Stripe, and specialist ones like Canva or Zapier (which itself opens the door to thousands more apps). Once connected, you can ask Claude to check your calendar, pull a client's CRM record, or schedule a social media post directly from a conversation. No copying and pasting between ten browser tabs.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
ChatGPT calls its version "Apps" โ Google Drive, Gmail, Outlook, Slack, Dropbox and more, plus custom connections for businesses. Recent updates mean it can now not just read your files but write to them too โ updating a spreadsheet or sending an email on your behalf, when you ask it to.
Gemini (Google)
Gemini's strength is naturally Google's own world โ Calendar, Gmail, Drive, Keep, Tasks โ plus a growing list of business connectors like Jira and HubSpot for teams using Gemini Enterprise. If your business already runs on Google Workspace, Gemini often needs the least setup.
Copilot (Microsoft)
Copilot leans hardest into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem โ Outlook, SharePoint, Teams โ and for larger organisations, connects to systems like Salesforce, ServiceNow, and SAP. It's built with enterprise governance in mind, so IT teams can control exactly what Copilot can see and touch.
Why This Matters for Your Business
You don't need to master all four. What matters is knowing that whichever AI assistant you use, connectors are what turn it from "a clever chat window" into "something that actually saves you time" โ pulling real information from your real tools, and increasingly, taking real action too.
That's the whole point of Done-For-You AI setups: connecting the right tools to the right assistant, so the busywork disappears and you get your evenings back.
